Get Ready, Set, Go for National Clean Your Bedroom Day

May 8, 2023

A clean and organized bedroom is essential for a peaceful and restful sleep, but it can be challenging to keep your (or your kids) bedrooms tidy, especially if you have a busy schedule. Since May 10th is National Clean Your Bedroom Day, what better time to tackle this chore? Deep cleaning your bedroom may seem like a daunting task, but it doesn't have to be. Here are ways to thoroughly tidy up your bedroom to create a calm and relaxing space.

Declutter and organize. The first step to deep cleaning your bedroom is to declutter and organize. Take everything out of your closet, dresser and nightstands and sort into three piles: keep, donate and throw away. Remove any items that don't belong in your bedroom such as dishes, toys and whatever else has made its way there. Once you've decluttered, organize your belongings by category and put them back in their designated places.

Dust and vacuum. Dust and vacuum your bedroom thoroughly to remove any dirt, dust or allergens that may have accumulated. Use a soft cloth or a duster to dust all surfaces including furniture, the TV, hanging pictures, lamps, etc. Vacuum the floors, under the bed, baseboards, closet floor and corners of your bedroom to eliminate dust, pet hair or debris that may have settled.

Clean your bedding. It’s the last thing we want to think about, but bedding can harbor dust, dirt and bacteria, so it's essential to clean it regularly. Be sure to remove all bedding, including sheets, pillowcases and comforters and wash them in hot water and a mild detergent. For an extra fresh touch, hang them to dry if you’re able. Be sure to also wash additional blankets, throw pillows, the mattress cover and fabric drapes.

Refresh your mattress. Because your mattress can accumulate dust, sweat and bacteria over time, it becomes an ideal breeding ground for allergens. To refresh your mattress, sprinkle baking soda over the surface and let it sit for 15 to 20 minutes. Vacuum the baking soda off your mattress using the upholstery attachment. This will help eliminate any odors and remove any dirt or debris.
