Categories: SJV Homes Blog | Posted: April 15, 2019 | Comments Off on Planning a Vegetable Garden

Is there anything more delicious than fresh fruits and vegetables picked and eaten during the height of their season? Driving across the state of California you pass miles upon miles of farmers’ fields planted for as far as you can see. Have you ever thought how nice it would be to have just a sliver of that in your own back garden? Planting and maintaining a vegetable garden isn’t necessarily as hard as you may think, and the rewards are out of this world! Consider these few steps to see if this is an activity you’d like to tackle:

1. Measure and monitor the light in your proposed garden area. Are there trees or roof lines casting shadows? Do you get all day sunshine or just during certain times of the day? Do you have areas that don’t get direct sunlight at all? Read the rest of this entry »

Now that you’ve moved into your new home, you may want to try to make a bit more secure. Even if you live in a safe neighborhood an ounce of prevention can still go a long way, and you may feel just a little bit safer with these tried and true ideas in place:

1. Window Coverings. During the day open them and let the light shine in, but once it gets dark, close them. They provide privacy and give the illusion that people are home, especially if a light is on. If you’re not going to be home, you can have electronic curtains drawn from your smart phone, or you can hire a neighbor to open and close them for you. Read the rest of this entry »

Spring Cleaning Tips

Categories: SJV Homes Blog | Posted: March 4, 2019 | Comments Off on Spring Cleaning Tips

Spring has almost sprung, so it’s time to get cracking on the all-important spring cleaning. Your house will feel fresher and cleaner and, in turn, be a happier place to be in. Here is a short list of chores to tackle from the inside out!

1. Get Scrubbing! Give all your walls, baseboards and outlets a new refreshed look by removing the dust and dirt that’s been settling on them all winter. Use mild grease cutting cleaners to clean outlet plates (little fingers love to stick to these!). If you remove them from the wall for a deep clean, be sure they are dry before replacing. For hard to remove stains, gently clean stubborn areas with a magic eraser but test a small area first to make sure paint doesn’t come off walls. Read the rest of this entry »

The Benefits of Owning Over Renting a Home

Categories: SJV Homes Blog | Posted: February 18, 2019 | Comments Off on The Benefits of Owning Over Renting a Home

If you’re in the market for a new place to move, whether you’re relocating or just changing things up, the renting versus owning question might come up. But what are the benefits of purchasing a house? We’ve laid out a few reasons here to help you make up your mind.

Residential Stability
No one is ever going to tell you you’re going to have to move. That decision will solely be yours. In a rental situation, a landlord can at any time give a tenant notice they are selling their home forcing a relocation at a potentially inopportune time.

Freedom to Renovate
Don’t like the kitchen? Change it! Don’t like the color? Paint it! The only one in charge of these decisions is you. And it’s up to you how and when you decide to do them. Read the rest of this entry »

Design Trends for 2019

Categories: SJV Homes Blog, Uncategorized | Posted: February 4, 2019 | Comments Off on Design Trends for 2019

Your house is purchased and you’re ready to move in. Now comes the fun! You get to decorate your brand new house. You have a blank canvas, so every picture you hang, every piece of furniture you place is going to be the first this house has ever seen. Sounds completely intimidating doesn’t it!

Not to fear. We’ve curated some of the top design trends of 2019. This list – combined with your own personality and style – will have your friends and family oohing and ahhing over your beautiful new home the minute they walk in. Enjoy!

Clutter is Out. Less is In. Consider a few well-placed, sleek items instead of lots of collectibles. While having an eclectic style definitely defines your personality and charm, choose a few really meaningful items to display instead of everything at once.

Bring the Outside In. So much of our day-to-day life is managed around technology. Your home should be a serene and calming place that highlights simplicity. Use natural and organic elements to decorate and design like stone and wood. A few easy-to-care-for plants – not succulents…they are out for 2019 – will add a sense of nature to your home.

Colors Should be Subdued. Almost considered feminine, walls in blushes, creams and bronze can be used to break up monotonous taupes and neutrals giving an unexpected hint of softness and warmth to a room.

Florals are In. For those who love wallpaper and floral patterns, this is your year! Beautifully designed patterned papers can be used elegantly on walls or in small rooms.

Go Bold in the Kitchen. If you want to add a pop to this busy and popular room, add a boldly patterned backsplash. Let this be the focal point of the room, so don’t be shy with your choices. It’s also easily replaceable if you want to change it in years to come.

Four Poster Beds. If you’re in the market for new bedroom furniture, the classic four-poster bed is a comforting and stylish way to make a statement. On its way out are overdone brassy metals. If you have a brass bed already, use other elements that don’t include brass and metal in the rest of the furniture and décor.

No matter what your style, try incorporating just a few of these ideas into your new home. For design inspiration visit our San Joaquin Valley Homes models where you can see some of these ideas already working in the house you may choose.

Upstairs Downstairs…Do You Prefer One or Two Stories?

Categories: SJV Homes Blog | Posted: January 21, 2019 | Comments Off on Upstairs Downstairs…Do You Prefer One or Two Stories?

There are so many considerations to be made when shopping for a house…and a major decision can be whether or not to go with a single-story – often called a ranch style or bungalow – or a two-story home. Many times, this is simply a personal decision – one may be more appealing than the other. If you’re on the fence as to which type to buy, our list of pros for each may help you:

Single-story pros:
1. Every day cleaning is easier since, basically, it’s all on one floor…no lugging laundry, cleaning supplies or the vacuum cleaner up and down the stairs.
2. They’re often safer for the younger – and the older – set. Let’s face it. Stairs can be troublesome to some who have limited or no mobility. If you have very little children or elderly adults living with you, they may be more comfortable not needing to navigate a flight of steps all day long. Read the rest of this entry »

Five Reasons Why We Love Open Floor Plans

Categories: SJV Homes Blog | Posted: January 7, 2019 | Comments Off on Five Reasons Why We Love Open Floor Plans

Our new homes typically feature expansive ‘great rooms’ which function as spaces for family and friends to gather without feeling the constriction of walls and closed areas. The benefits of open floor plans are many which is why we love them. Here are few of the perks to this design style:

1. Open floor plans give the illusion of more space. Smaller homes tend to look and feel bigger when there are no boundaries to cut the room in half. High or vaulted ceilings help with this look too. Read the rest of this entry »
